In most cases we need the title to the vehicle. But, if you do not have title papers you can
apply for a replacement title before donating your vehicle. Please visit the Connecticut DMV web
site to obtain the necessary forms before donating: Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department
Take your plates to a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office with your registration, so you can cancel the registration.
This protects you from tickets and other charges that could arise after the vehicle is long gone.
You may also receive a registration refund if you have a year or more left on your registration. Don't
cancel your liability insurance until you've cancelled the registration. For additional
information, please refer to the Connecticut DMV web site: Connecticut Motor Vehicle Department
The following types of vehicles do NOT require a title in Connecticut: Any vehicle manufactured
before 1981. Boats with motors or boats greater than 19.5 feet without motor. Trailer titles are
needed if the trailer is greater than 3000 lb. Vehicles with "Salvage" stamped on their titles
require a damage/repair estimate. Such an estimate (break-down of needed repairs) can usually be
obtained from the insurance company who stamped the title, "Salvage".
You must sign the reverse side of the Certificate of Title to the organization to which you are
donating the vehicle. If you are not transferring your registration and plates to another
vehicle, then you must turn them in to your local motor vehicle branch office. For an extensive
editorial on titles visit Connecticut Title
