Massachusetts Title Processing Information
I've got the title in front of me now where do I sign?:
Release ownership by signing on 3 one on the front of the title. If the vehicle is, or was financed, the lienholder’s name appears in the legal owner section and their release with counter signature is required on line 1 in the release of first lien section.
The notice of transfer/release of liability is done by surrendering the vehicle's license plates to any Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) office. Make sure you receive a plate receipt. Take it, along with information on the whereabouts of your sold vehicle, to your local Assessor's Office for possible excise tax adjustments that may be due.
Or, if you prefer, mail the plates to:
- Attn: Express
- Registry of Motor Vehicles
- P.O. Box 55889
- Boston, MA 02205-5889
The receipt will be mailed to your address on record.
I'm the registered owner but I can't find my title:
The registered owner of the vehicle can apply for a duplicate title if the original has been lost, stolen, mutilated or destroyed. You will need to complete a Duplicate Title Application after which time you will receive your duplicate title in 7 to 10 business days. Mail the duplicate title form along with the $25 fee to the address below. If you have a lien on the vehicle you will need to mail a lien release along with the other form.

If you don't have the papers to get a duplicate title and you don't have a clear title you can opt for a parts only title. First you must get an executable title in order to obtain a parts-only title.
If you don't want to go through the process of obtaining a duplicate title, we can take care of the process for you. We will need you to fill out the papers forms below.
Application for Duplicate title (T20558-1005) signed (front and back) by all owners.
Notarized Lien Release (if applicable).
If there is an electronic title and an electronic lien a written lien release is not acceptable. IAA
cannot obtain a duplicate title until the lien holder releases the electronic lien. The lien holder
must contact the state to remove the electronic lien. When a duplicate title is obtained by the branch it must be returned to the provider in order to have the owner sign it because a power of attorney cannot be used. The IAA branch does not perform this function. Title Solutions can perform this service for the insurance company for an
additional charge.
The owner of the vehicle is deceased:

In the case of the death of an owner: The deceased’s interest in the vehicle automatically transfers to the
deceased’s spouse. Transfer of ownership can be accomplished with a copy of the death certificate, an
Affidavit of Surviving Spouse, and a properly signed title by the surviving spouse.
In the case of the death of an owner with no surviving spouse: The transfer of ownership is accomplished with a copy of the Certificate of Appointment of the administrator or executor from the probate court and a
properly signed title by the administrator or executor.
