What paperwork do I need to donate my vehicle in Minnesota?

In most cases we need the title to the vehicle. But, if you do not have title papers you can apply for a replacement title before donating your vehicle. Please visit the Minnesota DMV web site to obtain the necessary forms before donating: Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

How do I release the liability of my donated vehicle in Minnesota?

To release yourself of liability from a donated vehicle, the state of Minnesota requires that you fill out the Seller's Notice of Sale located along the bottom of a Minnesota title. This little tear-away strip must be filled out and sent in to the Department of Public Safety within 10 days of releasing the vehicle.  You can also fill the same form online here. What types of vehicles do not require a title in Minnesota?

The following types of vehicles do NOT require a title in Minnesota: Any vehicle purchased before 1972, trailers under 4000 lbs, ATV's, snowmobiles and off road vehicles. Titles are needed for boats greater than 20 feet, any boat with a motor and trailers greater than 2500 lbs. Boats (watercraft) manufactured before 8/1/79 do not need titles.

To properly transfer a title, the donor(s) must sign the release on the title and complete the assignment to the new owner. If there is an "AND" conjunction on the face of the title, ALL owners must release the title.  With an "OR" conjunction, only one of the owners is required to release the title. What do I do with my license plates?

The state of Minnesota does not require you to surrender your license plates but if you choose to return them, you may do so at any Minnesota Department of Public Safety branch.
