Maine Title Processing Information

I've got the title in front of me now where do I sign?:

Release ownership by signing in the middle of the title, line 4, off to the right on the back of the title. If the vehicle is or was financed by the lienholder you will need to have the lienholder sign in the lien release section of the title.

In order to release the liability of your vehicle you will need to notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) that the ownership has been transferred by either surrendering the plates or going down to your local BMV and filling out a cancellation form.

I'm the registered owner but I can't find my title:

If your title has been lost, stolen, mutilated, destroyed, countered, or has become illegible and you are the registered owner you can apply for Duplicate Title Application (MVT-8) which will allow you to receive a new title which will be submitted along with the appropriate fees

There can be no lien listed with the state of ME or you MUST have a lien release and proof of certified correspondence to owner. If you are unable to obtain a negotiable title or the paperwork for a duplicate title, a Salvage title MAY be obtained through the abandonment process. You will need a letter on company letterhead requesting the abandonment process be initiated along with copies of all correspondence to the owner. IAA will send a request to the DMV and they will notify all owners via certified mail of the impending abandonment. This is a lengthy process and should be considered only as a last resort because the DMV doesn’t always issue a Salvage Title on abandonments.

If you want to donate your vehicle but you don't have the title and you don't want to go through the process of getting a duplicate title, we can go through the duplicate title process for you. You will need to fill out the forms below and hold them until the tow agent comes to pickup the vehicle.

A generic POA signed by all owners listed on the title and POA MUST appoint Provider AND it’s agents.

Lien Release (if applicable).

The owner of the vehicle is deceased:

In the case of the death of an owner with a living spouse and title shows “Joint Ownership”, you will need a copy of the death certificate and a properly signed title by the spouse.

In the case of the death of an owner with a living spouse and title doesn’t show “Joint Ownership”, you will need a copy of the death certificate, an Affidavit of Surviving Spouse (MVT-22), and a properly signed title by the spouse.
