Connecticut Title Processing Information
I've got the title in front of me now where do I sign?:
Release ownership by signing on line 8 on the back of the title. If the vehicle is, or was financed, the lienholder’s name appears in the legal owner section and their release with counter signature is required in the lien of release on the front of the title.
In order to release the liability of your vehicle you'll need to remove the license plates and turn them in to a DMV office. You'll receive a receipt, which you'll need for removing the vehicle from your town's property tax assessment list.
If you can't visit an office for some reason, send the plates to:
DMV
60 State St.
Wethersfield, CT 06161
You should include a letter explaining that you want the plates canceled and be sure to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope so the DMV can send you the receipt.
I'm the registered owner but I can't find my title:
Duplicate Title: The registered owner(s) of a vehicle can apply for the Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title (form H-6B), which when completed properly will allow you to receive a duplicate title. There will be a fee of $25 for a duplicate title. If an active lien is on the vehicle you will need to mail in a lien release all with the duplicate title form.
Affidavit in Lieu of Title: If the Provider is unable to obtain a negotiable title or the proper paperwork for a duplicate title, IAA can obtain an Affidavit in Lieu of title in the name of the Provider. Certified mailings are sent out to the owners and lien holders with a carbon for the DMV. After a waiting period, paperwork is filed with the DMV including a repair estimate and copies of the certified mailings. The DMV will issue an Affidavit in Lieu of title which serves as the sale document. We require written notification on Provider letterhead requesting the Affidavit in Lieu of title, with owner and lien holder information and a copy of the repair estimate. The entire process takes 6-8 weeks.
ABA Title Abandonment: If the Provider wishes to abandon a vehicle relinquishing their rights to any proceeds of sale, IAA can apply for an “ABA Title” through a process called Artificer’s Lien. An attempt to contact the owner(s) and lien holder is made via certified mail with a carbon for the DMV. After a waiting period of 45 days, IAA files form H100 along with copies of the certified mailings with postal verification, and repair estimate to the DMV. The DMV will then issue an ABA title for IAA to sell vehicle. We require written notification on Provider letterhead releasing their interest in the vehicle. The letter must include owner and lien holder information and should be accompanied by a repair estimate for the vehicle.
If you want to donate your vehicle, but you don't have the title and you don't want to go through the hassle of obtaining a duplicate title, we can do it for you. All you need to do is fill out the forms below and hold onto them until the tow agent comes to pickup the vehicle.
Two completed generic Powers of Attorney signed by all owners listed on the title (one to apply for the duplicate title and one to sign the duplicate title when it is received from the DMV).
Lien Release (if applicable).
The owner of the vehicle is deceased:
In the case of a one owner death: If the estate does not exceed $20,000, we will need a certified copy of the
death certificate, an Affidavit from the probate court for the spouse/next of kin, and a properly signed title by the spouse/next of kin.
In the case of a probate estate: You will need a certified copy of the death certificate, notarized probate papers, and a properly signed title by the executor of the estate.
The vehicle was abandoned on my property:
In most cases we can still pick up the vehicle, if we need paperwork from you it will be in the form of your signature on a short document describing the location where the vehicle was left and your request for us to remove it.
